BirdPhilly is an initiative of the Delaware Valley Ornithological Club. Founded in 1890, the DVOC has been based at the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia since 1891. The DVOC runs fields trips throughout the tri-state region, however BirdPhilly focuses on trips within in Philadelphia city limits in collaboration with Philadelphia Parks & Recreation and the Fairmount Park Conservancy.

Through BirdPhilly our goal is to increase interest and awareness of Philadelphia’s birds by providing quality birding experiences on expertly guided field trips. All field trips are free unless the site charges an admission fee. These trips are open to children, adults, and well behaved pets. BirdPhilly also participates in DVOC’s Philadelphia Bird Race to raise funds for conservation and research projects.

Our chief goal at BirdPhilly is to get Philadelphia area residents interacting with nature. Seeking out wildlife and spending time in green spaces keeps you active, alert, and engaged with your surroundings. Beyond the simple joy of the beauty of birds, we're trying to share with people how being a nature enthusiast is good for you as an individual. Albert Einstein once said, "Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better." A life led in touch with nature is richly rewarding, activating the mind and good for the body too.

So we need your help. While our BirdPhilly field trips are free and the Philadelphia Bird Race is a largely free event, the management of these initiatives is not without cost. We are entirely volunteer-run, so need support from the public to maintain our efforts and grow our efforts to reach a larger audience. Routine maintenance costs are about $3000 each year, so any contribution you can make is sincerely appreciated.

Those of you wishing to make an impact donation of $300 or more will receive a signed copy of BirdPhilly co-founder, George Armistead's new book, the ABA Field Guide to the Birds of Pennsylvania. If you are a business owner and are interested in supporting us, complete the sponsor form below.
